Heating Systems – What You Need to Know

[ad_1]

For homes, industrial settings, and offices there are many heating systems with some more suitable for some locations than other. Two of the biggest differences are the power and size of the heating system. Regulating temperatures in a major shopping center or a high-rise building is different than regulating temperatures in a basement apartment or small home. No matter the setting the basic operating equipment is somewhat consistent.

Forced air system

This is the system that you most commonly in homes. It is also used in stores and offices. This system works by forcing air out into different parts of the home, building, or store through ductwork and vents. It is also referred to as a central heating system. The air can be heated using different methods like natural gas, electricity, oil, or propane.

Radiant heat

This system is acknowledged for the ability to create comfortable natural heat that is constant through the building. A central pump uses a system of hot water tubes that are installed in the ceiling panels or under the floor to distribute the heat. A boiler heats the water powered by natural gas, electricity, oil, or propane. To heat a room can take awhile because water has to be heated first before it can be circulated.

Hydronic

This system is also referred to as a baseboard system. Like radiant heat a boiler has to heat water for the system and then circulates the heat through tubes located in the baseboard heating units, which is affixed to a wall in every room of your home. This system is energy efficient, quiet, and fueled by natural gas, electricity, or oil. The temperature in each room is normally controlled by the person in the room. They are not controlled by a central thermostat.

Steam radiant

This system will heat a room through units that sit upright and are called radiators. They have one, maybe two pipes and can heat water in several methods like natural gas, electricity, or oil. These units can quickly warm a room and are energy efficient they can be a problem when it placing furniture. Nothing can be sat in from the radiators.

Geothermal

This is one of the more recent options for heating and can be found offices that are eco-conscious and homes. They use a natural heat that comes from under the ground. To install them it can be expensive but they will pay for themselves overtime. They energy-efficient and will not use much in the way of non-renewable resources like electricity. This means that your utility costs will be very low.

When thinking about a heating system think how much it will cost and how it will be powered to choose the best heating system.

Radiators – Vital Part of an Efficient Central Heating Systems

[ad_1]

They are a vital part of your domestic central heating system, yet radiators rarely make it to the front row of the central heating components list. Central heating systems are often associated with a good boiler and a large cylinder in most people’s minds. However, radiators form a crucial component of the system together with other controls and TRV (Thermostatic Radiator Valves). A well built modern radiator can make a major impact on the performance of your central heating system, as well as have a major visual effect on the look of your rooms.

Radiators are over 150 years old. Franz Sangalli from Germany has registered a patent on radiators in 1855. They are effectively a hollow metal case, normally flat in shape that is attached to the wall of the room. Most UK radiators are made of sheet steel with attached fins to emit more heat.  The heating medium, most frequently water, is pumped into the top of the radiator. The hot liquid emits the heat into the room and as it cools off it drops to the bottom of the radiator and eventually out. The air around the radiator heats up and creates a convection effect drawing in colder air to heat up.

A typical domestic central heating system has a closed loop of pipes (normally copper) that over time develop pockets of trapped air inside them. The source of these air bubbles is either seeping through tiny cracks in the system of a result of chemical reaction that results gasses creation within the closed system. If such gasses (e.g. Hydrogen) are trapped within the central heating loop, it normally remains at the top of the radiator preventing the water from getting there and using the full area of the radiator for heating. In such case it is recommended to ‘bleed‘ the radiator from a bleeding screw at the top of the radiator. Radiators on upper floors tend to have more air pockets locked in them, due to the air’s natural inclination to rise to the upper-most point of the loop. As such, top floor radiators will require more frequent bleeding.

Most boiler manufacturers these days require the heating engineer installing the central heating system to power flush the central heating prior to commissioning. This ensures the system is clean from any debris that might have accumulated during the years (for example inner corrosion in older systems). Furthermore, most UK Corgi registered plumbers recommend adding a corrosion inhibitor chemical into the closed loop circulating water, to inhibit production of Hydrogen that would otherwise occur as a result of hot water coming in contact with iron.

The radiator should be sized according to the space to be heated and ensure the temperature is pleasant. Recommended temperature for the living room is 21c and for bedrooms and kitchen 18c. A correctly sized radiator will ensure the boiler is not overworked and is used in the most cost effective way.

Non Vented Natural Gas Space Heaters

[ad_1]

Gas space heaters are a great alternative to standard fireplaces and central heating systems for a number of reasons. Whether you need to heat specific areas inside your home, you need an affordable source of heat, or you just need an easy to use heating system, an indoor space heater is likely the solution you are looking for.

These products are great for homeowners who do not want to spend tons of money having a central heating system or a fireplace installed too. The installation of a central heating system can be very pricey, because there are many expensive parts that must be purchased to complete one of these systems and the laying of vents throughout a home can be very costly as well.

The installation of a fireplace can be very costly, because the installation of a fireplace requires a large amount of construction and it even requires the construction of a chimney. By simply purchasing an indoor space heater for a few hundred dollars, you can remove a tremendous amount of the difficulties that are commonly associated with these other heat sources.

A space heater is also particularly useful when there is a specific portion of a home that must be heated. A large fireplace can hardly be moved to fit the unique and changing needs of a homeowner, and a central heating system can only heat the entire home as a whole, but an indoor space heater can target specific areas and they can help you stay warm no matter which portion of your home you want to be in.

Since these products cost hundreds less than the next best alternative, they use an affordable fuel source to run which makes them cost effective, and they can heat any space in your home more effectively than the other heating options that are available to you today, gas space heaters are probably the best heating solutions you can buy for your home right now.

Keep Your Home Warm With These Efficient Heating Solutions

[ad_1]

As the temperature drops, proper central heating becomes more and more important.  Ensuring that your central heating system is working correctly should be a top priority for you and your family with a single faulty part capable of ruining your winter holiday season.  There are a number of issues that can surface during the cold winter months.  One common issue is frost damage, which can harm boilers and pipes, preventing them from working efficiently.

In previous years, the central heating system was designed with the frost thermostat located near the boiler.  Its job was to start the boiler when the air temperature dropped and stop the boiler when the air temperature reached an acceptable level.  If the thermostat detected excessive heat escaping from the boiler or surrounding pipes it quickly turned off the system, in order to conserve energy and prevent excessive heating of the home.

A new development in insulation materials for central heating systems has made the frost thermostat’s job much more challenging.  Modern boilers and pipes are much more insulated than their older counterparts.  Energy conservation was the goal of this alteration; unfortunately the problem of overheating persists.  The frost thermostat is no longer able to detect changes in temperature accurately.  As such, overheating and energy waste continue to occur.

Installing a pipe thermostat can solve this problem.  A pipe thermostat is typically placed on the outside of the boiler return pipe, measuring the temperature of the pipe (assuming copper pipes are good heat conductive materials).  Its purpose is to turn off the boiler before overheating occurs.  There are several new products that contain both a frost thermostat and low limit pipe thermostat, providing standard room temperature setting capabilities along with frost protection capabilities.

Installation and set up of these new thermostats is simple and quite intuitive.  Guidelines for complete wiring and installation arrive in the kit, ensuring simple installation.  The frost thermostat is usually set to 5C and the pipe thermostat is commonly set to 25C.  Additional pipe thermostats can be bought for other exposed pipes, to further insure that your system is completely protected.

If the pipe thermostat fails to meet your needs, there are other solutions.  A fully programmable room thermostat is one option.  These devices can be installed in a number of locations throughout your home, usually in a living room or bedroom.  Their job is to measure and monitor the temperature of the room.  The thermostat can be set to change the room temperature several times a day, depending on the homeowner’s needs.  There are several kits that operate by means of radio signal, from the thermostat to the boiler.  These Radio Frequency (RF) thermostats require no wiring, which makes them very easy to install.

Thermostats are an important element of your home heating system but, there are other variables that impact your heating efficiency.  By sectioning the home off into zones, waste can be avoided.  The use of zones, allows you to focus the heat where you need it most.  More populated areas can be kept warmer than empty rooms that do not require as much heating.  This minor change can produce great results.  Not only will heating bills be lower but, system efficiency will be greatly improved.

Oil Boiler Central Heating Systems Vs Air Source Heat Pumps

[ad_1]

It’s the harshest winter season we’ve had in a long time. Many heating bills will be a lot higher than previous years and money which should be spent on more enjoyable things is having to be used to keep the house warm. There is a way to reduce electricity bills as well as be more energy efficient? Rather than using conventional oil boilers which rely on expensive fossil fuels to run, there is another, greener more economical heating system that suits the UK climate – Air Source Heat Pumps.

Standard oil boilers are renowned for being expensive and damaging to the environment. Oil fired boilers can provide a consistent flow rate which is similar to that of a traditional gas boiler, providing a continuous hot water supply on demand. However this is the standalone positive for this type of heat source. Oil boilers rely entirely on a environmentally damaging fossil fuel in order to run effectively. In a time when environmental friendliness has become one of humanity’s highest priorities, this simply isn’t good enough.

A far more positive green solutions is to use an Ecodan Air Source Heat pump. Similar to solar heating, the pump works by using the solar energy in the air to produce hot water, supplying the entire household with as much heat as necessary. Furthermore, the pump can be placed discreetly outside your house, causing little intrusion as it gathers the necessary solar heating energy required to heat your home. The benefits of this new heating method are abundant.

Heating bills will be reduced by 40%. That’s a lot of money being saved when you consider the price of a standard winter bill. The pump provides a consistent supply of hot water at 55oC – a warmer temperature than that of an average bath. More importantly, however, your home’s CO2 emissions will be cut in half. That’s right – up to 50% of your carbon emissions will be gone. If we think about how much that can do for the environment, it’s certainly a considerable option. Not only that, it’s necessary for a sustainable, low carbon future that we must all work towards reaching. So if you are looking for a cost efficient, eco-friendly, alternative central heating system available to domestic homeowners, then look no further than the air source heating technology.

Condensing Boilers – A Quick Guide

[ad_1]

Offering efficiency levels of over 85 percent condensing boilers are by some distance the most energy efficient type of central heating boilers currently available in the UK.   In comparison a new standard boiler will be at most 78 percent efficient with older systems being as little as 60 percent efficient.

A condensing boiler makes better use of the heat that it generates from burning fuels such as gas or oil. They work by recovering the heat that would normally be wasted by conventional boiler systems.   In a conventional boiler some heat is lost because the boiler releases very hot waste gases from its flue.   Instead of wasting this energy a condensing boiler uses some of the heat from these waste gases to heat water returning from your central heating system, so it requires less heat from the burner. This makes your condensing boiler more efficient.

Choosing to install a condensing boiler is a great idea for a number of reasons.  As the most energy efficient type of boiler they require less energy to heat your home.  Since you are using less energy your heating bills can be reduced significantly.  Although condensing boilers are a little more expensive than other alternative heating systems through savings on your heating bills this extra cost can be paid back within two years.

Condensing boilers are also an environmentally friendly heating system for your home.  By using less energy they help to reduce your carbon footprint.  Used in conjunction with cavity wall insulation and double glazing they are perfect for both making your home environmentally friendly and keeping your home warm all year round.

Condensing boilers fall into two main categories – regular and combination.  Since combination boilers aren’t compatible with all types of central heating system it is best to seek the advice of a professional heating engineer to find out which type is most suitable for your home.

Top 5 Ways To Keep Your Central Heating System In Good Condition

[ad_1]

Repairing or replacing your central heating system can be an expensive process. By taking a few preventative measures you can greatly reduce the amount of problems you are likely to experience over the lifespan of your central heating system.

This will not only save you money by making your system less susceptible to breaking down – but actually prolong the efficient working life of the boiler.

Over time your central heating system will accumulate a number of compounds that are detrimental to the efficient operation of your boiler – such as lime scale and iron oxide. The iron oxide compounds are created by the slow corrosion of your central heating pipes and radiators, and the lime scale is created by the precipitation of the calcium compounds out of the hot water itself*

Iron oxide takes on the appearance of black sludge in your central heating system and Calcium Carbonate will resemble the white chalky lime scale in your kettle at home.

Both of these compounds stick to the surfaces of your system causing premature failure to your heat exchanger (inside your boiler) hot water heating coils (inside your cylinder) valves, and any pumps you have installed.

Having these compounds stuck to the inside of your central heating system will also significantly affect the efficiency of your boiler by reducing the heat transfer of the circulating water within it. An inefficient boiler will of course burn more fuel than necessary and with energy prices the way they are this in turn will cost you money! It will also increase your carbon footprint and your personal impact on the environment.

By following the tips below you will be helping prevent:-

  • Pump failures
  • Radiator cold spots and failures
  • Radiator leaks
  • Boiler noises
  • Boiler breakdowns
  1. Powerflush your central heating system

A powerflush or power flush is the process by which a machine is connected to your central heating system to dislodge and remove the build up of compounds within it. This is achieved by vibration and the pumping of water at high velocity but low pressure (to prevent damage) through the system until clean.

Chemicals are incorporated in to the process at the start and the end to assist with the removal of debris and also to prevent future corrosion.

A strong magnet is often incorporated in to the machine to remove iron oxide and other metallic compounds present in your system.

  1. Use a corrosion inhibitor

As mentioned, metal within your central heating system will corrode over time.

To prevent this process taking place or more accurately to delay this process, an inhibitor can be added to your system. An inhibitor is a chemical compound which when added to the water in your central heating system creates a thin film on the surface of your pipe work thereby decreasing the rate at which the metals and alloys within it corrode when in contact with water.

The correct quantity and type of inhibitor will substantially reduce the effects of corrosion. In some cases by as much as 90%. Inhibitors are commonly added to a central heating system after a power flush has been performed.

  1. Install a filtration system

As mentioned earlier your gas central heating system may contain a lot of corrosion and lime scale which will ultimately damage your boiler, pumps and valves. A water filtration system will remove particles and compounds that are freely circulating through your central heating system preventing these particles from entering your boiler and pumps and clogging them up!

Numerous filtration systems are available on the market today and many will incorporate a magnetic filter to remove the iron oxide (rust) created by the corrosion of your system e.g. Magnaclean.

  1. Regularly servicing of your boiler

An annual service of your boiler will extend the operational lifespan of your central heating system by indentifying any faults or progressive defects manifesting in the system. It will also reduce the cost of repairs and decrease the chances of an outright

boiler failure – as faulty valves and pumps can be replaced as they wear and before their failure puts unnecessary strain on the rest of the system.

Faulty gas appliances are a serious hazard to health so the most important benefit derived from having your boiler serviced is the knowledge that your boiler is safely functioning and is of no danger to you or your family.

  1. Use the services of a reputable, reliable gas company

Reputable and reliable gas engineers can be hard to come by when you need one most. By anticipating your future needs and developing a strong relationship with a company or engineer specialising in central heating, you can avoid the time consuming and sometimes frustrating act of trying to book an engineer to service or repair a faulty boiler.

Companies like www.serviceteam.co.uk can organise an annual boiler service for a fixed fee and provide you with same day services should you have a problem that requires immediate repair.

They will also keep detailed records of your central heating system on file, and will be able to notify you in advance of repairs or replacements required that may have been identified when they serviced the boiler.

This continuity will save you time and money in the long run as in many cases the diagnostic process will be reduced or eliminated.

(*Calcium Carbonate is present and soluble in cold water however when the water is hot it precipitates in to the chalky white substance you may be familiar with inside your kettle!)

Central Heating System – Upgrade Your Radiators For Better Efficiency

[ad_1]

If you have just moved into a new home, you might not be aware of how old and inefficient your central heating system is, thus resulting in you remaining blissfully unaware of just how bad it us until the bill arrives through the door and you think to yourself that you have not really had much use out of the central heating the last month. The high bills could be due to poor energy efficiency, and this needs sorting out before it's too late.

Your Radiators Are Important

The most important thing to start with is to call your energy provider out. They should be able to give your central heating system and radiators throughout the home a thorough check to ensure everything is running smoothly. Inevitably, if your central heating is not very energy efficient, they may suggest a number of upgrades such as a new boiler or new radiators. People often forget the important part that radiators play in the efficiency of a central heating system, but for your house to feel warm in all rooms, you need your radiators to be up to scratch. Moving into a new home might mean they are a bit outdated and in some rooms they may not work or be falling to bits. Everything ages and radiators are no exception – they have a hard job to do, so it is important that they are up to standard in the modern household.

Out With The Old … In With The New

Naturally, you want to be energy efficient, and with constant reminders on TV and on the web, we can not help but be reminded of our carbon footprint. Your central heating system plays an important part in this. Indeed, only turning the heating on when necessary is crucial for being energy efficient and keeping costs down, but the radiators in the home also play a part. If they are old radiators, the heat probably is not penetrating through them properly, or they take a very long time to warm up, thus wasting money and becoming a highly inefficient option for energy savers. There comes the time when upgrading radiators is a must, and your energy supplier will be able to recommend the best solution for you. Consider an upgrade on the boiler too if it looks a bit old – all these factors could help to make your home much more energy efficient, which will in turn reduce the monthly energy spend!

Come Home To A Warm House With Central Heating

[ad_1]

Homeowners up and down the country in the UK are returning home from work to find their humble abode is freezing cold. They then turn the central heating on and have to wait an hour or so for it to heat the whole house. This situation isn’t ideal, but if you have a digital thermostat which you can pre-set to warm your home when you want it to, then you can make sure you never have to return home to a cold house ever again!

A Simple Upgrade

It sounds like a simple idea, and it is, but some people won’t be fortunate enough to have a digital thermostat with their central heating system, thus they won’t be able to pre-heat the home ready for their return home from work. However, if you call up your central heating engineer then you may find that he is able to install a digital thermostat for you without having to upgrade the whole central heating system. This is a good idea, and you will be glad of the digital thermostat in winter.

The Flexibility You Need

You might be wondering just how flexible a digital thermostat is. These days, your central heating system can be programmed to work around you and your home life. If you get up early in the morning and want the radiators to be warm as you stumble out of bed bleary-eyed then a digital thermostat allows you to pre-heat the system so it comes on an hour before you get out of bed. No need to rush for the dressing gown in the mornings! In addition to this, coming home after a long day at work can be made much easier simply by having the central heating turned on for when you walk in. If you finish work at 5.30, set the thermostat to come on at 4.30pm and you should find that every room in your house is toasty warm by the time you get in.

So, if coming home to a warm house makes your eyes light up, you can make it a reality simply by calling your central heating engineer and seeing if he can upgrade part of your system. For example, it could be central heating Swindon or elsewhere in the UK, but there are always engineers out there ready to help provide you with a more efficient system.

Save Money With New Central Heating Systems

[ad_1]

Heating your home and the water that you use on a daily basis is an expensive task and one that costs homeowners hundreds of pounds every year. Central heating systems that are over ten years old are often still in good condition, however you could save yourself money every year by paying for a new system that is more efficient both in terms of energy and financially.

The initial cost might be more than you had expected to pay for your central heating, but when you consider that each month you might be saving yourself £10-£15 pounds, every year that is over £100 and you will have earned the money back for the installation within three years. You can compare this to a boiler break down of your old boiler and the cost of repairs or a replacement down the line and you will have saved yourself money in the present.

But why are these new central heating systems so much more efficient than their older counterparts? The answer lies in new technology and different ways of working.

Combi boilers mean that your water is heated up instantly so there is no need to leave your boiler on for half an hour or longer with some appliances, just so that you can have a quick two minute shower. This cuts down on running time. You can then use the excess hot water to heat the radiators around your home.

The technology which has been developed in recent years also means that the central heating systems are more energy efficient so that they are in-keeping with international policies on climate change and greener fuels. Government initiatives are set on reducing carbon emissions on a national scale, and central heating is one of the biggest contaminators that households emit. You can now get government grants to help with the installation costs of these greener systems, so you might end up spending very little on the initial set up of new central heating.

This means that not only are you saving money every time that you get an energy bill, you also cut down on costs when you are having installation. An all round winner for consumers.
