You can get central heating systems and services from a number of suppliers including local hardware stores and dedicated companies. You need to make sure you choose the right system that will suit your home size, the number of people using the hot water and the number of rooms in your home. You can make that decision with the help of a qualified engineer or the sales people at your local shop or on the phone.
This article might be able to help you get a small idea about the different central heating systems available however.

Combi-Boilers
Combi boilers are efficient, small and powerful. They can supply a household with instant hot water which cuts down on the storage space necessary to fit a large tank in. This is ideal for busy homes with lots of people, small homes and bungalows. The water enters the system directly and is heated as it passes along the pipes and to your taps. There is no need for a storage tank which is an added bonus.

Gas Systems
With gas central heating you will find that your bills are slightly smaller than if you were to have and electric system. Water is heated in a tank from flames underneath and the water is kept warm with an insulating jacket over the boiler. Your water and radiators are heated in the same way and it takes a relatively short amount of time for the water to heat up.

Electric Systems
Systems which are powered with electricity have safety benefits which gas boilers simply can not offer. There is no risk of explosion or fire with the electric systems and gas leaks are avoided. This is a problem that has affected many of the older gas central heating systems. However electric systems can cost more to run and if something goes wrong they are often more complex to fix.

Combi boilers are by far the most efficient and useful central heating systems taking up less space and costing less money than the gas and electric versions. Installing a new system is easy when you find the right national supplier who will give you great service and specialist after care.

Recent years have seen the cost of gas and electricity rise considerably.  This rising cost combined with the current economic downturn has understandably lead to people looking at ways in which they can reduce the amount they spend on utility bills.  A major part of utility bills is the cost of central heating.  Fortunately there are many things that people can do to reduce the amount they spend on heating their home.

Replace Inefficient Heating Systems

If your central heating system is over ten years old you may want to consider replacing it.  Installing a newer more efficient heating system is a good way to reduce the amount of energy needed to heat your home and so reduce your bills.  Condensing and Combi Boilers both make good replacements for aging systems.

Central Heating Grants & Rebates

If you live in the UK you may qualify for a central heating grant.  The UK government offers grants of up to £2700 to be put towards the cost of central heating, loft or cavity wall insulation and draught proofing.  To qualify you need to either own your own home or be renting from a private landlord and be receiving an income or disability related benefit.  People over the age of 60 may also qualify for a central heating rebate of £300.

Cavity Wall Insulation

Studies estimate that as much as a third of a homes heat is lost through its walls.  One way to reduce the amount of heat escaping is to install cavity wall insulation.  Cavity wall insulation makes heating your home more efficient and so reduces the amount you need to spend on heating your home. A further benefit of cavity insulation is that having it installed can actually increase the value of your home.

Solar Hot Water Systems

Solar hot water systems are a way to provide your home with hot water in a cost effective and environmentally friendly way.  The amount of solar energy reaching the roof of an average home in the UK can easily contribute to a significant part of the households hot water needs and so reducing the use of the standard water heater.

As can be seen there are several ways in which you can reduce the amount you spend on central heating.  These cost savings can all be done without the need to compromise on keeping your home warm all year round.

How Your Central Heating System Works

Have you ever wondered how your central heating system worked? Most people do not know which is why I have attempted to explain it in very simple terms

An average modern heating system will have some major components which are a boiler, radiators, hot water cylinder, thermostat, programmer, hot water cylinder, thermostat, pump and valve. The boiler has two jobs, to heat your radiators and heat your water tank. The programme which contains a clock allows you to automate when the heating and hot water is turned on and off.

When the boiler is turned on by the programmer the boiler will then be turned on and offer by either the room thermostat or the hot water cylinder thermostat. Each of the thermostats will turn the boiler on and off as and when the heat is needed.

The valve is electrically operated and is basically a switch which makes the hot water flow to the radiator or hot water cylinder depending on which thermostat is calling for heat, which can be both.

The water in your boiler is not the same that comes out of your taps. The water in your heating system goes around and around the boiler and radiators indefinitely. The only time it would get changed would be if a plumber were to drain the system for some reason.

If you ever wondered why your boiler continues to run for a few minutes after the boiler has been turned off this is because you have a modern boiler with a pump over-run facility. This removes the risk of static water in the heat exchanger being boiled by left over heat after the gas flame have been turned off which extends the heat exchanger life.

The pros of gas central heating systems is that gas is a highly efficient fuel which is why it's the most popular fuel in heating systems. The gas is piped directly into your home so you do not need to store it anywhere like you do with Oil or liquid petroleum gas (LPG). The downside of gas is that prices are high and seem likely to stay that way because we are competing with other countries to buy our Gas from abroad as we are no long self sufficient.

With Gas central heating systems it is very important to understand the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. Boilers and gas appliances can leak carbon monoxide which can be fatal. Carbon monoxide is produced when gas appliances like boilers or ovens are not fully burning their fuel. This could be down to having be installed poorly or incorrectly, or when vents, chimneys or flues become blocked. This is the same for coal, wood, petrol and oil fired boilers as they can all produce deadly carbon monoxide.

This is why it is very important to get your heating systems and fuel powered appliances installed by experts and not just anybody. Boilers need to be annual serviced to ensure they are all working safely and efficiently and should only be installed by someone who is on the Gas Safe Register which is what replaced Corgi. This basically means they are legally allowed and qualified to do the work.

As time goes by slodge and scale builds up in central heating systems. When this starts to happen, it reduces how well the central heating works and therefore may by causing heating bills to go up. Simply central heating systems need to be cleaned and power flushing is the best technique to ensure the whole central heating system is thoroughly cleansed.

Power flushing your central heating system allows the heating system to optimize the heat output of radiators and promote energy efficiency. Power flushing uses the power of water at high velocity to clean the system out. When power flushing, water is at a high velocity but the pressure itself is low so that no physical damage is caused to the system. The power flushing process is simple but very effective if done correctly.

Power flushing is done by connecting a power flushing pump to the heating system. It can be connected at any position like standard circulator pump coupling, or across the tails of one radiator or any other place. There is an immediate flow reverser device which works with the powerful flush. It dislodges and mobilizes deposits of sludge and scale.

To get rid of the dislodged sludge, clean water is pumped through the heating system which flushes out the dirty water using a full bore pump valve. When the process is completed the heating system holds only clean fresh water. Prior to power flushing, traditional cleansing systems were not able to move these deposits.

Heating problems can be solved by power flushing. This is because the action of power flushing improves the circulation through the pipe work so the radiators and boiler do not have to work so hard. Several problems with your central heating system, like it not getting hot can be solved with a power flush.

If your radiators are not getting hot and you constantly have to bleed them you should think of having a power flush. Another indication to have a power flush is when your heating system is noisy. This indicates sludge build up and may really be crying out for a good power flush cleansing.

It is vital to choose a trained plumber or heating engineer to carry out your power flushing job. It is vital as a skilled person with high levels of experience is needed to the power flush. The highly skilled plumbers and heating engineers will have methodical techniques to isolate and concentrate on troublesome areas so that you are left with an optimized central heating system.

One of the best ways to increase the value of a home is by upgrading the central heating system. Some of the best reasons for updating is for comfort, to conserve energy or because the current system is no longer operable. Most homes are generally operating at an average of 75% rate of efficiency meaning that 75% of the energy (normally gas, oil or electricity) is utilized in the operation of the furnace. Therefore an average of 25% is wasted, which is money down the drain. Newer central heating systems are made to run more efficiently than ever before. Currently most furnaces that are being installed are operating at a 90% or better average rate of efficiency. Conserving energy equates to lower utility bills which means more money in your bank account. Therefore over time the new central heating system will pay for itself. In addition, the upfront market value of a home is increased with the installation of a new central heating system. If you were to sell the home, the value would be increased by the new system and would also make the home more appealing to a potential buyer.

With central heating, the heat is generated in one central place and then distributed throughout the home or building. This approach differs from local heating where the heating source such as a space heater or fireplace heats only one area or room. A typical system for central heating involves burning fuel such as gas, oil or coal in a boiler or furnace. In a home the furnace is normally located in the basement, attic, utility room or an airing closet. In commercial buildings, the furnace is normally in a dedicated boiler room. Electric central heating systems are more common where there are low cost electricity supplies or geothermal heat pumps are available. There are also green / environmentally geared central heating systems which are becoming more and more popular with growing concern for the environment. Such alternatives to fossil fuels such as solar and wind power are becoming more common but they are still much more expensive to install and therefore have not yet become mainstream.

The heat generated in the furnace, either from electricity, the combustion of fossil fuels or by seizing solar energy, is then distributed throughout the home. There are various methods for doing this. One method is to pump heated air through duct work. Another method involves heating water in the boiler and then circulating steam or hot water through pipes around the home or building. The pipes lead to wall mounted radiators. Each radiator has a regulating control so that the heat can be adjusted in the room.

The central heating system is often part of a larger and more expansive HVAC system (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning). HVAC systems are used to control the temperature and often the humidity. Updating a HVAC system improves a home's comfort and value while lowering utility costs but does often come with a hefty price tag. Factors such as size, brand and model all contribute to the price of a HVAC system. The price of a new system can range from $ 750 to $ 3000. A new furnace will cost on average $ 1500. This price does not include any accoutrements or installation. When it's time to get a new central heating system or HVAC system, price is often a concern. It's important to do your homework so you understand what type of system you currently have and what you need to have implemented. Do not be afraid to ask questions and always get at least three quotations from notable contractors.

In this article we are looking at and reviewing under floor heating systems, we will be looking at the disadvantages and advantages of this form of central heating in comparison to its more common counterpart using radiators as a heating option

Under floor heating is a fantastic way to warm your house and an excellent alternative to standard central heating system which uses radiators, which can certainly have their disadvantages, namely they can be seen as ugly, they take up space and also with the radiators being exposed they are not ideal especially with small children and the elderly about who can burn themselves on hot radiators.

Under floor Heating Advantages

Under floor heating has many advantages the main one is that you can do away with radiators, this alone can make a room look a lot bigger and in general it just looks better and gives a room a much cleaner minimalist look

It is ideal in situations where the elderly or young people will be living as a common accident is burning on hot radiators another common accident that happens more with younger children causing injury falling in to radiator corners and banging their heads.

Unlike radiators under floor heating systems are well known for providing much more even heat distribution obviously the heating pipes run under the whole floor so at floor level an even heat is achieved throughout any room.

In general under floor heating is more economical than standard heating systems this is due to it being more energy efficient so with an under floor system you could actually save yourself money in comparison to a standard central heating system using radiators.

Electrical under floor heating is often just as effective as liquid under floor heating as in the same way it distributes the heat evenly this is something that cannot really be said about standard systems where electric options are defiantly less affective.

Under floor heating also has the advantage of being generally less noisy. For anyone who has normal central heating you can often hear noises created from the water moving through radiators and the rest of the system.

You do not have to arrange your furniture to fit around radiators

Disadvantages Of Under Floor Heating

There are only a few disadvantages of under floor heating so we have listed them below

Not all floor surfaces are going to work with all under floor heating systems therefore certain systems are going to cost you more money to install.

Maintenance can be expensive due to the heating not being immediately accessible like a standard radiator, with that said most under floor heating companies offer excellent warranty packages which can see you covered for any problems for years after the initial installation.

Some surfaces will take longer to heat than others for example concrete floors may take 30 minutes to 1 hour to reach full heat, the same can also be said for wooden surfaces.

Gas Boiler Repairs

Although many modern gas central heating systems are reliable and efficient from time to time things can go wrong. As with other appliances in the home your boiler can break down and you should be aware of what to do and who to turn to if this happens.

Firstly, you should be fully aware that if your boiler breaks down you should NOT attempt any repairs yourself. It is actually against the law for any person who is not registered with Gas Safe scheme (formerly Corgi) to carry out any repairs, installation or servicing of any appliance connected to the gas supply. If you find yourself without central heating because of a boiler breakdown then contact a central heating installer or Gas Safe registered plumber who will be able to repair the unit or declare it as defunct.

If you are worried about the cost of boiler repairs, or even the cost of a new boiler if yours cannot be repaired then there are a number of insurance schemes on the market. Alternatively, when buying your new boiler shop around for a model with a guarantee. If you were to experience a breakdown during the guarantee period the unit will be repaired for free and replaced if it cannot be fixed.

Keep an eye on your boiler

Whilst you cannot carry out any repairs on your boiler you can carry out routine checks throughout the year to ensure it is in good working order. Keep you eye on the pressure gauge. Typically the pressure should be between 1.0 and 1.5 bar. If you see it dip below or rise above these levels contact a qualified engineer who can make some simple checks to correct the problem.

Also, look for the flame of the pilot light. You may be worried that your boiler has broken but if you cannot see the flame of the pilot light this will be the problem. A boiler cannot work if the pilot light is unlit. Many modern units allow the user to re-ignite the pilot light simply by pressing a button so check this before calling an engineer to your home. If you are unsure of how to ignite the pilot light you should consult the boilers instruction manual.

Before calling a heating engineer to your home you should also remember to check your gas supply. For example, if you have a gas oven try turning it on. If it does not heat up it is possible that the gas supply to your home is not connected. If this is the case you should contact your gas supplier, rather than a heating engineer. They will be able to diagnose why you have no gas to your home and will be able to reconnect it as quickly as possible.

If you can smell gas in your home it is possible you have a leak. In this instance you should immediately call Transco, who are employed to respond to gas leaks throughout the UK. Do not turn on or off any light switches, do not ignite any gas appliances and do not smoke. If possible you should vacate the house until Transco arrive.
